    Backstory to House (TV series)

    Hello everyone!

I found an article that details one of my relatively new favorite TV show, House came to be. What you do think out there guys?

LOS ANGELES — Even after a couple of weeks of giddy two-hour ratings for “American Idol” on Tuesday nights, the Fox network has no trepidation in turning to a drama to follow “Idol” at 9 this Tuesday, because the drama in question, “House,” is already the strongest scripted hour that Fox has to offer.

This season “House” has reached as many as 17.5 million viewers a week. And those numbers were scored before the show enjoyed what it will enjoy again, starting this Tuesday — the adjacency to “Idol.”

Along with those stellar ratings, “House” is bucking the current trend in serialized dramas. It tells a complete story every week, which means that its repeats are far more valuable. All this success comes from a series that at first seemed to belong on a different network, that struggled so much in its early weeks that Fox cut back its order of episodes, and that at one point defied what sounded like a fix-or-be-canceled order from executives.

That it all worked out so well is a testament mainly to the show’s consistently high quality. But as its top producers, David Shore and Katie Jacobs, noted in an interview in their offices here on the Fox Studio lot, it also took some preposterous luck in casting and some exquisite timing in scheduling.

Things might never have worked out had a largely unknown British actor named Hugh Laurie not sent in an audition tape at just the right time. Or had all of Fox’s other new series in the fall of 2004 not failed so quickly that by the time “American Idol” came the next January, “House” was the show selected to be placed immediately behind it.

“Probably the only reason we’re still around,” Mr. Shore said, “is because they had nothing else.” What “House” really had was a creative team committed to its vision of a singular lead character. “What they pitched was a doctor who hates people but solves insoluble medical mysteries,” said Craig Erwich, executive vice president of programming at Fox.

That was how Mr. Shore and Ms. Jacobs, along with her husband and producing partner, Paul Attanasio, conceived their show in the summer of 2003 — although there was one critical difference in the character. At first, Dr. House was in a wheelchair.

“The idea was that this was not only a doctor who didn’t want to see patients, he didn’t want to be seen by patients,” Ms. Jacobs said.

Gail Berman, who headed Fox Entertainment, loved the idea, but she had one caveat. “Gail decreed that he not be in a wheelchair,” Mr. Shore said. “That’s when the cane came in.” But Fox did not object to House’s other quirks, like calling patients idiots and popping Vicodin like M&M’s to stave off pain in a damaged leg.

Everyone at Fox also got the unmistakable allusions that Mr. Shore was making to a classic character: the brilliant mind for connecting obscure scientific clues, the drug habit, the antisocial behavior and, of course, the best friend who was his outlet to the real world. It was all easy to spot — especially when the friend’s name was Dr. James Wilson instead of Dr. John Watson.

“The Sherlock Holmes thing was part of it from the beginning,” Mr. Shore said. It is also the reason the character is called House. “That was our little joke,” Mr. Shore said. “Holmes, as in ‘home,’ becomes House.”

It became the title of the show, though that initiated another issue because “House” sounded like a family show, not a medical show. (Mr. Erwich said one title considered was “Jagged Little Pill.”)

The title problem was addressed in two ways: first, adding “m. d.” in tiny letters after the title, and then, in what Ms. Jacobs called a clever touch by the Fox graphics department, putting a square around the first letter in “House” to signal the setting of the hospital.

Mr. Laurie, who was in Namibia shooting a film when he made the initial audition tape, had received only a few pages of the script and thought that House, as nasty as he was, must surely be a supporting character. Mr. Shore knew Mr. Laurie from his comic work in England in shows like “Black Adder.” “I knew him as a British twit,” he said.

After an appearance that Mr. Erwich called “one of the great auditions of all time” no one else needed to apply.

Before “House” had its premiere, in November 2004, the producers had heard great things about the quality of their pilot, and endless questions about why this show was on Fox. “This is such an NBC show, everyone was telling us,” Ms. Jacobs said.

One reason everyone thought of NBC may have been that by that time NBC owned the show because it had acquired Universal, the show’s original studio. But Fox had already secured the rights to the series, not that it seemed a coup at first. Its ratings in the fall, before “Idol” started, were puny. The producer began to worry when they finished up shooting their first 13 shows and no order came for more.

Just before breaking for the Christmas holidays, Fox called the producers in for a meeting. “They were demanding changes,” Mr. Shore said. “They wanted a bad guy.” The character was meant to be in constant conflict with House.

“There was the clear implication that your show is gone if you don’t accede to these demands,” Mr. Shore said. Nevertheless, he was opposed. “I said no,” he recalled. “I said it was a bad idea. They sat there and nodded and agreed.”

Mr. Shore left for Israel on vacation. He had barely landed when he got what he called a “panicked phone call” from Ms. Jacobs saying Fox had asked when the outline for the new character would arrive. “I realized things aren’t going so well,” Ms. Jacobs said. “It was very stressful.”

What neither producer knew was that Ms. Berman had called Jeff Zucker, who as head of NBC television was in charge of the Universal studio, and asked that the show’s original order for a full 22-episode season be cut back to just 16.

Eventually, Mr. Shore relented just enough to create a character, a hospital administrator, who would clash with House in a story arc. Chi McBride signed to do the part. Five episodes with Mr. McBride were shot. But even before they got on the air, the episodes the series had completed before vacation made it onto the air — behind “American Idol.”

The ratings soared. Mr. Shore ended the McBride character after just those five episodes. “House” was on its way.

Mr. Laurie has since won two Golden Globe awards as best actor. Mr. Shore gave Fox credit for appreciating down deep what the show was all about.

“There was a reason a network should have been scared” of this character, he said, adding, “Fox was never scared. The phone call I expected to get from Day 1 I never got: ‘Everything is great, great; but you’ve got to make the character more likeable.’ You always get that call, and we never got that call.”

    We have been busy

    Hello everyone!

I wanted to let you in on just some of what's been happening around here for the past month.

As you know, beloved has had some major trouble getting back to work but when I spoke to him yesterday afternoon, he sounded happy to be back and was on his way back to CA with a secret load that needed an escort. Sure hope that they are paying them extra but my guess is they aren't.

Money has been tight for a long time but since I have been working, it's been better so naturally different things around here decided to break down. First it was BOTH the washer and dryer which were almost twelve years old. I put a load of wash in before going outside to talk to a neighbor and when I got back about twenty minutes later, the laundry room was covered in dirty water. I had to clean up the water the best way I could and then called beloved. (This was one of the things that happened just before his just-okay partner quit before Christmas and he was several states away.) We always have an emergency check in the house thank goodness. When I told him that the washer had died and that the dryer was making a funny noise when I used it earlier, he told me to take that emergency check and find the best deal I could and get them delivered to the house. He was due home in about three days and I managed to find a commerical quality washer and dryer that was on sale at Lowe's. That turned out to be our Christmas presents to each other which suited us just fine and they have been one of the best appliances that we have owned. Then the garage door opener that was only nine years old decided to die about five days after beloved came home.

Since beloved was home, we went online shopping for the best deal we could find. We narrowed it down to two different models at two different stores and on my day off, went shopping. The best deal turned out to be thirty dollars cheaper than the other model we were looking at online and have been very happy with our choice. It's a belt drive instead of worm or screw drive if that makes sense to you. It's very quiet and has a lifetime warranty on the belt drive which is good since the screw drive on our nine year old opener died and the warranty on that was only one year. Two weeks after we bought and had it professionally installed, it went on sale, so I went back to Sears with the receipt in hand. We got back nearly twenty five dollars refunded to us so make sure that when the store promises to match a lower price within thirty days that you watch the sales, it's worth it! It took five minutes and maybe fifty cents in gas to go back and the salesman was so surprised; in fact he had to ask a manager how to do the refund since it's so rare that anyone comes back.

Well, that's about it for now. I need to get ready to go to work but will have more entries tonight if I am not too tired. I went blog walking last night but will blog walk again either tonight or in the morning before going to work. I have the mid day shift this week instead of the late shift like last week, thank goodness!

Talk to you soon and hope all of you are well.

    Exciting news in Entertainment

    Hello everyone!

I was surfing the 'net before I have to go to work today and found a story that made me smile. One of my favorite bands are getting back together. What do you think?

    And Van Halen Will Rock

    by Natalie Finn
    Wed, 24 Jan 2007 08:18:00 PM PST

It turns out David Lee Roth was right. Not about fashion sense or talk radio, mind you, but about the inevitability of a Van Halen reunion.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-bound band—Roth included—is now thisclose to inking a deal with Live Nation for a 40-date amphitheater tour, billboard.com reported Wednesday.

Roth, who unceremoniously parted ways with Van Halen in 1985, told the music magazine's Website eight months ago that getting him and his former hair-band brothers back together would not be "rocket surgery."

"It's very simple to put together," Roth said. "And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam, like what's-her-name at the end of the movie Chicago—'So what? It's showbiz!' So I definitely see it happening."

Unlike, say, his career in morning radio.

The former heavy metal frontman last rocked out with his fellow "Hot for Teacher" artists in 1996, when they recorded a few songs that ended up on the greatest hits album Best of Volume I. But an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards that year by all four original bandmates—siblings Eddie and Alex Van Halen, Roth and bassist Michael Anthony—proved that the guys weren't really ready to reconcile.

While fans hoped that their group showing—the quartet's first public appearance together in 11 years—was a sign of a full-fledged reunion, Roth issued a statement several weeks later saying he'd been the "unwitting participant" in a publicity stunt engineered to sell more copies of Best of Volume I, and that he told Eddie at the time he didn't "think it was a good idea for the band to go to New York half-cocked."

The Van Halen brothers and Anthony denied Roth's take on the situation, saying "the intention all along was to do two new songs" and that Roth was "never led to believe anything but that."

Despite the inauspicious undertones of that exchange, along with Roth's comment to tmz.com last month characterizing a possible Van Halen reunion as "Jerry Springer meets Knots Landing," it looks as if fans are going to get the chance to "Jump" for Roth, Eddie & Co. after all, with Billboard reporting that a contract could be signed as early as Wednesday.

Anthony, however, will not be along for the proposed ride, having since joined up with Van Halen's second former frontman Sammy Hagar for a series of shows in which they billed themselves as the Other Half and performed both Roth and Van Hagar-era Van Halen tunes.

Instead, Eddie's 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, will take over bass responsibilities when the band hits the road again, a notion that apparently doesn't sit well with Hagar, who last performed with Van Halen in the summer of 2004.

"That’s a lot of pressure for Wolfie," Hagar told billboard.com a couple weeks ago. "Just 'cause he's Eddie's son doesn't mean he can go out and play in arenas and perform and entertain an audience for two hours. I would love to see Eddie and Alex get behind Wolfie, with a kid of his age singing, and produce the record for him and help him launch a career. I'd rather see it go that way than come out and say 'Wolfie's the bass player in Van Halen and maybe singing, too.' Van Halen's got way too much history to have that put on him."

Hagar will have a chance to give Eddie some parenting advice in person in March, when Hagar, the Van Halen brothers, Roth and Anthony are scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"My hope is that everyone lets everything go and we go there in complete respect of each other and in a loving way, with the attitude that 'I couldn't have done it without you' toward everybody," said Hagar, ever the optimist.

    I'm back!!

    Hello everyone!

Well, it’s been too long to be away but I am back now. There have been so many things that have happened. Let me start from the beginning for those of you who haven’t read the last few entries.

Beloved normally drives his big rig for two weeks (for the past six months or so) and then is home for three days and then back to work. Neither one of us like the two weeks since for over ten years it was five days and home for two days. He had the same run every week and was guarantied a really large paycheck and now has to fight to get 80% of his paycheck since he never knows where he is going now since his last dispatcher lost his run. Beloved decided to change his run slightly to being able to be home on Sundays and Mondays instead of Mondays and Tuesdays and the other team was going to take the Mondays and Tuesdays off. Well, he never covered beloved’s run that he had for ten years so not only was his run lost, but the customer fired the entire team and twelve drivers lost their jobs in three states and beloved's company fired the idiot dispatcher. Beloved was distressed to say the least but it wasn’t his fault. So he was forced to make a decision; either go “system” which means you don’t know where you are going and/or how much money you are going to make per week and be gone for two weeks or find another job. Well, because of our personal situation he decided to stay.

His really good partner had to leave for personal reasons when they lost that run and so they found him a partner who was just okay. I met him a few times and I had an entry about this guy and am glad that he is gone now but not his timing. Just before Christmas, they went home for their usual days off when W. his partner called to say that he decided to quit the day before they were due to go back. It was a shock to both beloved and the employer and the push was on to find beloved a partner that was worth having and it was harder than any of us thought even though it was the holidays. Then when they thought they found a decent guy, we were gone for the day and he turned out to be an idiot. I also had an entry about this jerk who left a ton of messages and was fired as well. That just made things so much worse for both of us. What was wrong with beloved that they couldn't find a decent partner?

When they did find someone, I actually took a day off from work to help beloved load his big truck and so we took two cars seventy-five miles one way each to his terminal. We cleaned out the truck that beloved’s old partner didn’t finish and then loaded his clothes and food into the correct places and then went inside to find his new partner. As you probably read from a previous entry, he never showed up due to a mix up to when the partnership was going to start.

Well, beloved finally was able to get a partner and a run this week. He left on Wednesday mid-morning and even though the original run that they were going to get didn’t come through, they managed to get a run to NC that they will be delivering this coming Sunday. I haven’t found out anything about this new partner except that he is about five years older than beloved and has been driving a big rig for about eight years longer but beloved has more time with this company. For those of you who understand this business that means that beloved is first seat and T. goes into beloved’s truck. That suits both guys just fine, which makes me feel much better about the situation. When I find out more, I will have another entry about it.

For those of you who are used to your home life a certain way and there are changes you will understand my feelings that although I was very glad to have beloved home for over a month every day and having dinner made by beloved every single day that I was working I was spoiled rotten. But to have beloved back to work and me going to work everyday is different again. Pound puppy was so spoiled that it was hard to get back to our daily routine. Pound puppy gained four pounds in one month and that’s with at least two daily walks by me. That’s a lot of human food but beloved couldn’t help it I guess. We speak on the phone at least twice a day (thanks to pre-paid cell phone service) and we are both looking forward to the next twelve days or so to keep flying so we can… (fill in the blanks)

Well that’s about it, I need to get to bed. It’s been a long day and I am having a hard time keeping my eyes open now. There will be another entry, maybe two when I get home tomorrow and I will start blog walking Sunday. There have been a few things that happened around here that I want to share to stay tuned!

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers and will be seeing you all soon!

    Update on beloved and I

    Hello everyone!

There is still trouble with beloved's work and it has affected both of us negatively.

Exactly a week ago, beloved and I went to his work to meet his new partner that he only spoke to on the phone. It was my day off and we took two cars so that he could leave his truck at work and I could go to work for the two weeks while he was going to be gone. It's a seventy-five mile, one way to his terminal so that's three hundred miles for both cars and with gas prices still in the $2.60 range, it was a little expensive for me to go as well but I didn't care. I wanted to meet this guy and help beloved load his company truck and just pretend that I was the one going with him on this trip. I still wish that I could drive a big rig with beloved but with my neck injury and my PTSD that's just not an option anymore. Oh well.

Anyway, we got his truck loaded by 11:45AM and was waiting for his new partner to arrive at the agreed time of between 12 noon and 12:30. By 1:45PM, we went inside and spoke to the dispatcher to see if he had heard from him. He said that he was here somewhere and gave a good description of him and said that if he saw him come back inside, he would send him to the lunch room where we were sitting so that we could see everyone come inside. We left two voice mail messages that were not returned so we went back to the dispatcher at 3:30PM to find out once and for all what's wrong. We never found him but remembered that he mentioned to beloved that he might have to go to jury duty and might not be able to start until Thursday. We told the dispatcher that we were going home and would call back in the morning to see what he could find out.

It turned out that the dispatcher had given us the home number and not the cell phone number and there were two messages on our machine waiting for us when we got home. He said that he did have to take care of that jury duty thing (to get out of it) and was waiting in the front of the building instead of the lunch room. Can we start our partnership on Thursday? No problem beloved said and I had to work so I had to re pack his fridge and clothes before I left for work and kissed beloved wishing him a safe trip and said that I would call during my lunch hour to see how he and the new partner were getting along and where they were going.

When I called back four hours later, he said that there was a problem with this partner that just took the cake and would explain more when I got home that night. After spending nearly two hours putting the new partner's stuff in his truck, the dispatcher told G. that he had to take a surprise drug test and gave the directions on how to get there and it needed to be completed within an hour. Beloved was driving the truck and they were having a nice conversation until they left the terminal and went on the other side of the freeway towards the clinic when G. asked him how long pot stays in your system. Of course beloved doesn't smoke (anything) and said so, why? Well, I celebrated New Year's Eve smoking it and I may not pass the drug screen so now what? The answer is that if you refuse to take the drug test, you will be fired but it won't show what drugs you might have been on and could say that you had a beer or two instead of illegal drugs. So G. decided to save face and just refuse to take the test and quit. That way after 60 days or so (we have since found out that's the minimum that it stays in the urine unless you smoke a lot) he can look for another trucking job.

So twice in one week, beloved had no partner and no run. We also put on 450 miles on both cars and beloved is really wondering what the hell to do now. He has spoken to another guy that just really may be a good guy to partner with but time will tell.

Meanwhile my work is going well and I am happy with my choice of a career. I just wish that beloved could find a good guy (or girl) to partner with and get some money coming back in. More importantly he needs to cheer up and that's what has me worried. He is down because I am the only one bringing in new money (his vacation was all used up two weeks ago) and that's never happened to us in the twenty plus years that we have been married. We have an old fashioned marriage that may not work for some but works for us. He is the head of our household and makes the bulk of the money and it's new territory for us to have me being the only one bringing in money which is a little weird. Beloved needs me more than ever and I don't feel comfortable staying away from him too long. In fact, he is sleeping now and I just brought Pound Puppy in for the night and took a few extra minutes to catch my friends up.

Please pray that Beloved finds a good partner and that he will be safe driving across this country during the winter. Thank you for understanding that my place is with my husband and talk to you all soon!

    Part Two

    Hello everyone!

Beloved and I had a really nice New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. When I had to work for four hours on New Year's Eve, it went by pretty fast and was home way before the drunks were out driving for sure. We did stay up to watch the ball drop in New York, but went to bed shortly after.

Pound Puppy is "digging" having Daddy home so much. Not only did Pound Puppy get a Christmas bone, but also has been eating breakfast with us everyday. I never would have thought so but since Daddy has given Pound Puppy oatmeal with raisins and a side of toast with peanut butter three times since New Year's Day. I don't know how I will be able to get the dog back on the normal diet but at least it's been relatively healthy food right?

Beloved may finally be getting a partner this week and be going back to work on Tuesday. After the crazy idiot was fired, his dispatcher needed a swift kick in the butt and beloved gave it to him. He spoke to him asking why has it been taking so long to find a thirteen year veteran a partner and he had no answer except that it was harder than he thought. Let me first tell you that neither beloved and I are discriminators of Mexicans but his dispatcher has made it clear that he prefers Hispanics over everyone else because he is a Mexican. Beloved of course, ignored that part and just dropped a few hints that he also had two other dispatchers looking for him and if he didn't get a good partner this week, he was going up the company ladder. After all, he has been home for about five weeks now and has called in twice a week and has nothing wrong.

I then had to go work and when I got home on Thursday night, he said that he spoke to someone that was calling to see if they might team. The only problem is that he is a brand new driver and it's still winter time. Beloved asked him to call back on Friday which he did and found out a lot more about this guy. He really seems like a good guy just a newbie. The only big problem is that beloved may have lost his company truck. His dispatcher is being vague about it and beloved did leave a few things in it that we would be angry if they were gone but...

We will be going to his work on Monday (my day off) to make sure all is well and maybe kick some ass if needed and if there are no problems, he should be going back to work on Tuesday. It has been wonderful to know that he is home safe and that I will have dinner already made when I get home but I am sure that all of you married women know what I am thinking without saying it out loud.

Well, that's about it for now. Not able to blog walk yet sorry, soon I promise!

    Did you hear?

    Hello everyone!

Beloved and I had a very quiet New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and will find out this week if beloved has a new partner or not. While surfing the 'net I found this sad and strange news from Denver. Did you hear about it?

Broncos' Williams killed in limo shooting

    Associated Press
    Posted: 31 minutes ago

DENVER (AP) - Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed early Monday when his white stretch Hummer was sprayed by bullets after a nightclub dispute following a New Year's Eve party. Police have no motive and no indication the 24-year-old player was targeted in the drive-by shooting of the limousine. The burst of violence occurred hours after the Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention.

"All of us are devastated by this tragedy," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement. "To lose a young player, and more important, a great young man such as Darrent Williams, is incomprehensible. To lose him in such a senseless manner as this is beyond words."

A little after 2 a.m., the limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, hitting three people, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. As many as a dozen bullet holes were visible on the driver's side of the vehicle. One window was blown out.

Another man and a woman who were shot were not identified. They were taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital, where one of them was released.

Coach Mike Shanahan said the killing left him "speechless with sadness."

"We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first-class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality," Shanahan said. "I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss."

Jackson said there was a dispute at a nightclub several blocks from the shooting where Williams and his group had attended a party. He said the argument didn't specifically involve Williams, according to witnesses, and the confrontation wasn't physical, just taunts. He also said there were no shots fired from inside the limo.

"Why this happened, we're not sure," Jackson said.

Police were searching for a white Suburban or Tahoe with dark-tinted windows. Jackson wouldn't identify any of the other passengers nor would he confirm whether any other Broncos players were in the limo, which can hold 23 people.

The club identified by police advertised a New Year's Eve event celebrating the birthday of Denver Nuggets basketball player Kenyon Martin. The Nuggets canceled practice Monday.

Martin told The Denver Post that he and several Nuggets left the nightclub before midnight, before any problems arose. "I was there. He was there. I left. I saw him. That was about the extent of it," Martin told the newspaper.

Mark Warkentien, Denver's vice president of basketball operations, said police spoke with him but asked him not to comment. "We'll respectfully honor their request," Warkentien said. "And if the Denver police need us in any way, we'll cooperate fully."

The club — variously called Shelter or Safari — is on the second floor of a building in a once-seedy stretch south of downtown that has a growing number of trendy bars, clubs and restaurants. Outside, the building was unmarked except for a big sign from a former occupant, Jonas Bros Furs. Inside, the ceiling was strung with Christmas lights and set off with several fireplaces.

Hours after the shooting, the limo sat in a snowbank beside Speer Boulevard, a main street through downtown. Police and technicians worked amid snow and ice from recent storms, using small yellow plastic markers to indicate possible evidence.

A Denver police investigator places evidence markers next to the Hummer limousine in which Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed early Monday. Bullet holes can be seen in the door, and the rear passenger window is shot out. (Ed Andrieski / Associated Press)

"His heart was so big, he was always giving to those who didn't have," said Williams' mother, Rosalind Williams, who flew to Denver from Fort Worth. "It didn't even have to be for an agency or a charity. If he knew you didn't have, he'd hand it out of his pocket."

The previous active NFL player to die was Thomas Herrion of San Francisco. He had a heart attack following an exhibition game in Denver on Aug. 20, 2005.

Williams was a second-round draft choice in 2005 out of Oklahoma State and teamed with Champ Bailey to give Denver one of the NFL's top cornerback tandems. Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

His college coach, Mike Gundy, called the death a "tragic loss for the Broncos family, Oklahoma State University and anyone who knew Darrent Williams. It's a loss that goes far beyond the football field."

Players and coaches didn't have to report to work Monday but about 20 of them gathered at team headquarters to console each other, including receiver Javon Walker, who was in the limo when Williams was killed, according to several Denver media outlets.

Walker, who declined to speak with reporters, appeared to have blood spattered across his shirt when he arrived at the Broncos' facilities.

"Any time you lose a guy who was close to everyone, it hurts," punter Paul Ernster said. "From the get-go, he was like one of your good friends."

Anthony Criss, Williams' high school football coach in Fort Worth, Texas, said: "When he was younger, he always gravitated to the wrong crowd. I remember he went to church and the minister was talking to him about needing to pray and stop hanging around with the wrong people, and he started straightening up and doing the right thing."

In December, Williams spoke of returning to his hometown this offseason to talk to youngsters about staying out of gangs. Williams, who has two young children in the Fort Worth area, recently talked to Criss about establishing a free football camp for youth players.

"He wanted to be a good parent, a good father, a good example for his kids," Criss said. "He will be missed."

Williams' family was trying to arrange a funeral Saturday at the Great Commission Baptist Church in Fort Worth.

Last April, Nuggets guard Julius Hodge was shot while driving on Interstate 76 in Denver. In 2003, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who played at Colorado State, was shot outside a Denver sports bar.

"Since then, I carry myself in a different type of way," Porter said Monday. "I respect my situation whenever I go out. I take a whole different outlook when I go out. I make sure I feel like I'm safe and if I'm not, I'm not going."
